{"wiki":"en","slug":"guide-general-configmode","markdown":"# Configuration via Configuration Mode\n\n\nThis setup guide describes how to enable the configuration mode of the Behnke Station, protect it with a security code, and then use it.\n\nConfiguration mode allows you to configure the device remotely using a phone that can send DTMF tones, or (if available) locally on the device using the keypad or the display. Configuration is not done via the web interface, but by entering so-called **configuration steps**.\n\nConfiguration mode is protected by a 4-digit security code. It can be restricted to remote configuration or disabled completely.\n\n> [!NOTE]\n> Configuration mode must not be confused with network configuration mode. Network configuration mode is started with the configuration button on the back of the electronics box and is used to regain access to the device if the network configuration is faulty: see [Starting network configuration mode](System_network_configuration_mode).\n\n%[NOTE_REQUIRES_BASIC_SETUP](NOTE_REQUIRES_BASIC_SETUP)%\n\n\n## 1. Enabling configuration mode\n\n%[BS_LOGIN_INFO](BS_LOGIN_INFO)%\n\n- In the sidebar on the left, click the menu item %BS_MENU_ALLGEMEIN%\n- Navigate to the **Configuration mode** section\n\n![Section \"Configuration mode\"](uploads/9b86dd03573f020f2131c27501713335/grafik.png)\n\n- There you will find the option **Allow**\n\n| Value | Meaning |\n| --- | --- |\n| **no** | Configuration mode is completely switched off. The device can then only be configured via the web interface. |\n| **yes, by phone, keypad or display** | Configuration mode can be activated remotely using a phone and locally on the device using the keypad or the display. This is the default. |\n| **by phone only** | Configuration mode can only be activated remotely using a phone. Activation on the device is not possible. |\n\n- Set the option **Allow** to the desired value\n- Click %BS_MENU_SPEICHERN_ROT% to save the configuration\n\n> [!NOTE]\n> If **Allow** is set to **no**, the options **Security code** and **Lock activation on misuse** are hidden, as they have no effect in that case.\n\n\n## 2. Setting the security code\n\nThe security code is the 4-digit code that must be entered to activate configuration mode. It consists of digits only. From the factory it is `0000`.\n\n> [!NOTE]\n> In a future version, default passwords will no longer be used. This increases the security of our products and at the same time meets basic cybersecurity requirements of the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA).\n\n- Navigate to the **Configuration mode** section\n- Enter the desired code in the **Security code** option\n- Click %BS_MENU_SPEICHERN_ROT% to save the configuration\n\n> [!WARNING]\n> To prevent unauthorized configuration, the default security code should definitely be changed. As long as the code is too simple, the Behnke Station shows the message **The current security code is very insecure** below the input field.\n\n> [!NOTE]\n> The security code is not the administrator password. It protects only configuration mode, while the administrator password protects only the web interface. The two are assigned separately: see [Changing the administrator password of the Behnke Station](Guide_General_ChangeAdminPassword).\n\n\n## 3. Lock activation on misuse\n\nWith the option **Lock activation on misuse** you define how the device reacts to security codes that have been entered incorrectly several times. The default is **yes**.\n\nIf an incorrect security code is entered several times, activation of configuration mode is locked for a certain time. At first, activation is locked only briefly. Further failed activation attempts increase the lock duration up to a maximum of 24 hours.\n\nAfter a correct activation once the lock duration has expired, the lock duration is reset. It can also be reset by restarting the device.\n\n\n## 4. Activating configuration mode\n\n- Call the Behnke Station\n- Wait until it picks up and emits a beep\n- Briefly press the `*` key **within 2 seconds** after the beep\n- Enter the security code (default `0000`)\n- The device confirms activation with two beeps\n\n> [!TIP]\n> If more than 2 seconds have already passed since the beep after pickup, you can activate configuration mode by pressing the `*` key **twice**.\n\n> [!NOTE]\n> If the security code entered is incorrect, the connection is terminated.\n\n\n### 4.2 On the device via the keypad\n\n- Briefly press the `*` key on the keypad\n- Enter the security code (default `0000`)\n- The device confirms activation with two beeps\n\nIf the security code entered is incorrect, the device emits a low, somewhat longer error tone.\n\n\n### 4.3 On the device via the display\n\n- Press the display key with the key symbol to show the virtual keypad\n- Briefly press the `*` key (the virtual keypad is now displayed in blue)\n- Enter the security code (default `0000`)\n- The device confirms activation with two beeps\n\n> [!TIP]\n> If no key button is available on the display, you can also show the virtual keypad by swiping quickly and horizontally from left to right across the display with one finger.\n\nThe virtual keypad is provided by the display's code lock function. Activating configuration mode via the display is only possible if the option **Allow** is set to **yes, by phone, keypad or display**.\n\n\n## 5. Entering configuration steps\n\nWhen configuration mode is active, configuration is done by entering configuration steps. Each configuration step sets a specific function.\n\n- Enter the number of the configuration step -> the device confirms with two beeps\n- Enter the parameter and finish the input with the `#` key —> the device confirms with three beeps\n\nFor example, to configure the phone number 123 for key 1 (configuration step `21`), enter: `21` —> `123#`\n\nSeveral configuration steps can be entered one after another, in any order.\n\n> [!NOTE]\n> If an input is invalid, a dark, somewhat longer error tone is emitted. After the error tone, you can continue with the next configuration step.\n\n\n## 6. Ending configuration mode\n\n- Briefly press the `*` key\n- Alternatively, configuration mode ends automatically if no input is made for 30 seconds\n\n\n## 7. Configuration steps for configuration mode itself\n\nConfiguration mode can also be configured through itself. This is particularly useful if there is no access to the web interface.\n\n| Input | Function |\n| --- | --- |\n| `01` *new code* *new code* `#` | Change security code. The code has four digits and consists of digits only. Enter the new code twice in a row. |\n| `02` `0#` | Allow configuration: **yes, by phone, keypad or display** (default) |\n| `02` `1#` | Allow configuration: **by phone only** |\n| `02` `2#` | Allow configuration: **no** |\n| `00` `*` `*` `*` `*` `#` | Reset (the entire configuration is deleted and all parameters are set to the factory state) |\n\n> [!CAUTION]\n> Configuration step `00` resets the device completely to the factory state. The entire configuration is deleted in the process. The reset takes a few seconds, during which a high beep can be heard.\n\nA complete list of all configuration steps can be found in the Technical Manual in the section **Configuration steps**.\n\n\n## 8. FAQ\n\n> [!NOTE]\n> I have forgotten the security code\n>\n> Unlike the administrator password, the security code can be reassigned via the web interface: log in as administrator and enter a new code in the **Security code** option in the **Configuration mode** section. Resetting the device is not necessary for this.\n\n> [!NOTE]\n> The * key on the keypad has no effect\n>\n> Check the option **Allow** in the **Configuration mode** section. If it is set to **by phone only**, activation on the device is not possible; if it is set to **no**, configuration mode is completely switched off.\n>\n> It is also possible that activation is locked because of security codes entered incorrectly several times.\n\n> [!NOTE]\n> No keypad appears on the display\n>\n> The virtual keypad is part of the display's code lock function. If no key button is present, swipe quickly and horizontally from left to right across the display with one finger.\n\n> [!NOTE]\n> Activation is locked\n>\n> If the option **Lock activation on misuse** is set to **yes**, the device locks activation after a security code has been entered incorrectly several times - for longer with each further failed attempt, up to a maximum of 24 hours. Wait for the lock duration to expire and then enter the code correctly, or restart the device. Both reset the lock duration.\n\n> [!NOTE]\n> What is the difference from network configuration mode?\n>\n> Configuration mode is used to set parameters via phone, keypad or display and is protected by the security code. Network configuration mode, on the other hand, is started with the configuration button on the device and puts the device into the factory state with regard to the network configuration, in order to regain access if the network configuration is faulty: see [Starting network configuration mode](System_network_configuration_mode).\n","lastModified":"2026-10-14T13:47:15+02:00"}
