Enabling LLDP
This setup guide describes how to enable and configure LLDP on a Behnke Station.
LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol) enables the exchange of information between directly adjacent network devices. This allows, for example, a network switch to receive information about the connected Behnke Station.
It is assumed that the Behnke-Station is already set up to the extent that access to the web interface is possible. If this is not the case, please follow the instructions provided with your base electronics (manualsThis page carries no version. 1. Enabling LLDP
- Open your browser
- Go to the web interface of the Behnke Station
- Log in

- Click the menu item in the sidebar on the left
- Navigate to the LLDP section

- Set the value of the Enable option to yes
- Click to save the configuration
LLDP is now enabled.
Note
In the delivery state of the Behnke Station, LLDP is active regardless of the Enable setting. The setting takes effect as soon as the device is no longer in the delivery state.
2. Configuring LLDP
Further settings are available for LLDP.
Transmission interval
Specifies the interval at which the Behnke Station sends LLDP packets.
Transmission hold multiplier
Together with the transmission interval, the transmission hold multiplier determines the hold time of the information published via LLDP.
The hold time is calculated as:
Transmission interval × Transmission hold multiplier
With the default values, this results in:
30 seconds × 4 = 120 seconds
Publish system capabilities
Specifies whether the system capabilities of the Behnke Station are published via LLDP.
Publish management addresses
Specifies whether the IP addresses via which the Behnke Station can be configured are published via LLDP.
3. LLDP-MED
The Behnke Station additionally supports LLDP-MED.
LLDP-MED extends LLDP with functions for network devices in the field of IP telephony.
To use LLDP-MED:
- Set the option Enable LLDP-MED to the value yes
- Click to save the configuration
When LLDP-MED is enabled, the following information, among others, can be published:
- Inventory information
- PoE information
- Network policies for voice
4. Network policy for voice
Via LLDP-MED, the Behnke Station can receive a network policy for voice from a network device, for example a switch.
The option Apply network policy for voice can be used to specify whether a received policy should be applied automatically.
If a corresponding policy is received and its application is enabled, the Behnke Station adjusts its network configuration accordingly.
In doing so:
- the VLAN specified by the policy is used
- the IP address assignment is set to
dynamic
Warning
Applying an LLDP-MED network policy can change the network configuration of the Behnke Station. As a result, the IP address of the station may also change.
5. Configuring the network switch
In order for LLDP or LLDP-MED to be used, the function must also be supported by the connected network device and configured accordingly.
The configuration of the network switch depends on the manufacturer and model used and is therefore not covered in this setup guide.
6. FAQ
Note
LLDP is disabled, but my switch still detects the station
In the delivery state, LLDP is automatically active on the Behnke Station. The configured Enable setting is only taken into account once the station is no longer in the delivery state.
Note
Does LLDP-MED have to be enabled?
No. LLDP-MED is not required for basic device detection via LLDP.
LLDP-MED is needed if additional IP telephony functions are to be used, for example the automatic application of a network policy for voice.
